Ok,
we all love to surf the web and pour over the work of the various
costuming geniuses out there. But to actually do a project like that
yourself? It seems impossible. Especially for someone with novice
sewing skills and no fancy degrees in costuming.
But wait - before giving up, we notice
they've posted instructions. And they don't seem that hard. You always
wanted to make the perfect gown - but that's just a
"someday" dream. But what if...? Maybe it's worth a try.
That's what happened to me. I loved
pouring over other people's work, and played with the idea of buying
one of those costumes that pop up on Ebay from time to time. But
nobody seemed to make exactly what I wanted, so I just dreamed and
envied and wished I were a millionaire who could afford to commission a
renaissance wardrobe.
I
discovered the SCA in December, 2001, and needed garb to attend
events. So I took the next big step. I bought a Simplicity pattern, a
beginner sewing book, and some cheap fabric.
And the rest is history. By summer, I
was the proud owner of several gowns. By fall, I had constructed a
French hood to go with the gowns. There was great satisfaction in
completing something so elaborate, simply from information found on
the web. It gave me the courage to seriously consider the other
patterns out there.
By January, 2003, just
one year after
discovering the SCA, I made my black velvet, 1543 Tudor gown. And looking
back, I realize that without the help of countless other souls, this
would never have happened. Many of them don't even know I exist. They
posted their patterns and experiences on the web, not knowing how far
it would go, or who it would benefit.
Anonymously, I was able to learn from
them, and without the intimidation of instructors or time limits, I
was able to pursue my costuming dream. I learned, assimilated the
information, made my own interpretations, and then expressed it in my
own way.
Now, as an encouragement to others,
particularly those of you who don't believe it's possible, I'm posting
my newfound experiences, patterns, techniques and secrets. I'm going
to use my latest gown, the black velvet Tudor dress, as my subject.
Most of the patterns are already out there on the web - the same wonderful
resources I used. So now you can do it - make reality out of your
dreams!
It
all starts with research. Don't run...! It's not that hard. It's a
matter of exploring - which you're already doing!
